When We Are All—Guilty

July 2016 has been a tough month for the United States. Two African-American men shot and killed by Police Officers. Police Officers shot and killed by an unstable African-American man. The month is not over, nor is this the only bad news the nation has to live through.

What happens when everyone is guilty?

We talk about talking!

The requirement is action. Politicians are not known for action. They are talkers; negotiators and some are not very good at that.

The times we are in require leaders. Men and women who do not talk a good game but establish environments where positive action takes place. The Dallas Police Chief, Chief David Brown, and the Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlings, have been singled out for their efforts that have transformed the Dallas Police Department as a model for the nation in the area of community policing. Wonder Woman—Where Are You?

I have noted in many articles, discussions, and presentations the unique quality women have in the area of leadership.

I take particular note that it seems the Nation's top leadership producing institutions are coming around to my understanding. The United States Coast Guard Academy’s incoming class of Freshman Class will be made up of over 30 percent women. The incoming class at the U.S. Naval Academy will have just a little under 30 percent women in the population.

The nation needs the talents of strong leaders. This month of July is evidence of that. I am counting on the class of 2020 Coast Guard and Naval Academy graduates to be the best year for leaders this nation has ever had.

Men dominate leadership positions in the world today; clearly, we need some help.

Wonder Woman, where are you?

Performance Review

I am often asked for leadership advice based on my Marine Corps experience for use in business. This section is providing short leadership tips you can use in becoming an Exceptional Leader. Being good on any given day is easy. Being exceptional requires daily effort. Enjoy the read.

The Marine Corps has a great expectation of their leaders—develop the leadership ability of those you lead.

There are too many elements that encompass developing the future leaders. One of the methods used to develop leaders is the dreaded Performance Review.

Many of you in supervisory positions are deathly afraid of performance reviews. My advice—focus on observable behavior. A future leader cannot improve if they are unaware of what they should continue doing, stop doing, or start doing.

Toughen up! Focus on observable behavior. Develop those you lead. You and your organization will be better for it.

I address Performance Review in greater detail in my soon to be published eBook "Building Business Leadership Skills." It will have an accompanying audio book and will be released as an online class.
