The great thing about the political silly season is watching and listening to the amazing antics and superlatives that accompany each politician's rallies. There is a valuable leadership lesson I would not want any student of leadership or executive who is responsible for leading their team to success to miss. Learn the proper use of this one concept and your leadership capacity will increase exponentially. You win every time!

Women's History Month and International Women's Day

On 8 March 2016, the world celebrated International Women's Day, and the month of March is Women's History Month in the United States. I hope we all have taken some time to reflect on the past. The accomplishments of women throughout history in the world as well as in the United States.

I would like to reflect on the history yet to be written, the incredible possibilities of the future, near and far. Here is a glimpse of what I see:

• 2025—A team of scientists discovers the cure for cancer. A woman will lead the team.
• 2032—The United States will elect it's first African American Female President
• 2040—The first manned exploration flight will depart on a three-year journey to Mars. A woman will command the flight.

As I gaze into the future, it is big and bright for women and the world.

Dare to Care

I am often asked for leadership advice based on my Marine Corps experience for use in business. This section is providing short leadership tips you can use in becoming an Exceptional Leader. Being good on any given day is easy. Being exceptional requires daily effort. Enjoy the read.

If you want to lead, you have to have followers. That sounds like I have mastered the obvious. It is better said—if you want to be a leader people have to want to follow you.

There are those who by virtue of their position alone, have followers. They get the job done. Rarely do these leaders exceed expectations.

There are those who lead because they have a team that wants to follow them. They routinely produce great results.

The key to getting results beyond your wildest imagination—care about those you lead. When you sincerely are concerned about the welfare of those you are charged with leading, they will shine for you on dark days, and produce results that regularly exceed expectations.

Caring for your team members is a simple concept that many are afraid to put into use. Some feel it makes them look weak. That is too bad. I can only give advice. I dare you to care about those you lead. The team will flourish, the results will be more than expected, and the bottom line may prove exciting. If you are still worried about looking weak, get a gym membership.

On 8 March 2016, I was honored by being sworn onto the U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Advisory Committee On Women In The Services (DACOWITS).

The Committee examines and advises the Secretary of Defense and the Deputy Secretary of Defense on matters relating to women in the Armed Forces.
