Fortitude’s Impact Leading Program: Leadership On and Off the Field

Why Leadership Coaching and Mentoring in the World of Pro-Sports?

You have achieved great things in your career through hard work and your natural abilities. Are you ready to move your leadership abilities to the next level?

The essence of word “Leader” in the world of athletics is muted. It is used to describe a player with extraordinary physical abilities, a person playing a specific position or someone who holds a position of power on the team and in the organization. But what about true leaders? Where are the people who can transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, individuality into collaboration, and risks into rewards? We don’t see them. Many of those who carry the moniker of leader in the world of athletics are ineffective.

This isn’t just a problem in athletics. The harsh reality is most people ascending to leadership positions, regardless of industry, do so at the age of 30 years old. The average age of receiving their first leadership training and education is 42 years old. The gap is clear!

In the fast pace and short-lived careers of athletes, this is an unacceptable situation. There simply is no time to waste. The media overflows with stories of athletes demonstrating a lack of personal leadership skills. And the results?  Personal humiliation, as well as a team and organization, embarrassment is commonplace. Some even face instant poverty after earning historic salaries.  It is not necessary to accept the status quo. Leadership skills allow players to turn challenging opportunities into successes.

Like so many other skills, leadership can be learned and must be practiced. Professionals who are world class in any industry, from sports to business, private to public rely on the improving their finer points via a coach and trusted advisor. Being a World Class Leader requires the same level of practice, coaching and advising.

So, why doesn’t everyone have one?

In my experience, many high visibility professionals have egos that can fill Yankee Stadium and will never get coaching on leadership. The sense is the ability to lead came with the title or position. They don’t understand credibility and fail to realize most of their subordinates or teammates would not follow them to the parking lot at five o’clock.

Who Should Attend?

The Fortitude “Leadership On, and Off the Field” Program is intended for athletic team members and executives who have been recently promoted to a position of significant responsibility or are clearly on track for such a role. These applicants are expected to lead themselves, their teams, and be exemplars for others to emulate. It is not for the faint of heart or the weak in spirit. Anyone can learn to lead. Everyone can’t.

What will you get from the coaching?

The Leading On and Off the Field program is a three-day course, which will include leadership behavior, processes, and skill topics such as the importance of vision, and values, decision-making, risk reward analysis, strategy development, and implementing the plan.

Unique to this learning experience is the emphasis on leadership behaviors such as setting a personal example, building consensus, painting the big picture and actively listening to diverse points of view.

Participants will complete The Leadership Practices Inventory® or LPI. This industry leading highly regarded and validated 360-degree assessment tool measures how often 30 leadership behaviors are practiced from one’s own point of view and as observed by as many as 10 colleagues. In class, participants get valuable feedback from the LPI, learn how to interpret it, and use it as a guide to increasing behaviors that will make them better leaders.

In addition, participants will receive six weeks of follow-up coaching.

Key Takeaways:

Participants will leave the session able to:

  • Identify their own leadership strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Communicate fundamental values and beliefs.
  • Focus people’s efforts on key values through their own actions.
  • Inspire others to share a common vision.
  • Search for opportunities to take the risks needed for growth.
  • Build collaboration, teamwork, and trust.
  • Strengthen others abilities to excel.
  • Recognize the accomplishments of others.
